Maytrees Woolverstone B&B and Surrounding Area


Woolverstone is situated on the Shotley Peninsula which is formed by the Rivers Orwell and Stour. It is approximately a 15 minute drive to Ipswich Town centre and the nearby towns of Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Hadleigh, Sudbury, Colchester can be reached by car in a little over 30 minutes. Woolverstone is the home of Ipswich High School for Girls, The Royal Harwich Yacht Club, Woolverstone Marina and Maytrees Bed and Breakfast !

There are many footpaths and bridleways nearby and the country lanes around Maytrees are relatively safe for family cycling. The nearby villages of Freston, Holbrook, Stutton, Tattingstone, Harkstead, Erwarton (Arwarton) Chelmondiston, Pin Mill and Shotley are all easily accessible by cycle and feature on the Cycle South Suffolk leisure route. We are also within 10 miles of National Cycle Route Network Route 1. Alton Water reservoir is a 20 minute cycle ride away and boasts an exhilarating four and a half mile circular route around its perimeter, some of this is off road terrain whilst other is tarmac. Alton water is also home to a water sports centre where wind surfers, canoes and boats can be hired, along with bicycles. There is a nearby dry ski slope at the Suffolk Ski Centre and a number of horse riding centres within a 10 mile radius of Maytrees.

Shotley Gate has views across to Felixstowe and Harwich and there is a foot ferry available during the summer months to these places. Shotley was the home of HMS Ganges and there is a museum near to Shotley Marina which can be visited. The Church at Shotley has a Naval cemetery which includes the dead of HMS Ganges and the war dead of both Allied and German.

The Suffolk Show is held in June each year at Trinity Park near Ipswich, again just a 15 minute drive from Maytrees. Jimmy’s Farm is approximately 10 minutes drive away, as are Fox’s Marina and Oyster Marina. Ipswich Speedway, Stock Car and the World Hot Rod championship are held at Foxhall Stadium which is about a 15 minutes drive.

Further afield there other attractions including bird watching at RSPB Minsmere, 45 minutes by car, the Ipswich Transport museum, Museum of East Anglian Life, East Anglian Railway Museum, many local golf courses, Newmarket races, 45 minutes by car, Sutton Hoo, Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm, The Greene King visitors Centre, Go Ape, Suffolk Punch Trust, Visitors Centre, Thetford Forest, Music at High Lodge, Snape Maltings music venue, Framlingham Castle, Kentwell Hall, St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
